A geology day with Paul Gannon

~ Wednesday, 14th December 2011

Some of my work involves delivering Mountain Leader training and assessment courses on behalf of the MLTUK. This work is always very enjoyable and satisfying, primarily because I am involved with developing people as leaders of others in the mountains, a career path that I have enjoyed for many years.

Yesterday we had a CPD workshop day here in Snowdonia. During the morning a few of us went out with local geology guru Paul Gannon for a trip around Cwm Idwal. The wind was pretty strong so we had to huddle around each time we found something interesting.

Paul did a great job of explaining the basics of how various geological processes have created the rocks around here, but also how glaciation has effected things since. The end result is alot of rock types of different origins all being found very close to each other. Amazingly we found out that some rocks in the Cwm could actually have formed via volcanic, sedimentary or metamorphic processes!!!

It was a truly fascinating trip out, not only was the geology input fantastic, but the high wind kept ripping the top of Llyn Idwal off and blowing it out into the Nant Ffrancon. Amazing.

Many thanks to Mal at the MLTUK for organising a very valuable day, Paul for his knowledge and passion of rocks and mother nature for some of the best spray I've seen in a long time.
